Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Hits Parked Car

The man drove off after hitting the car, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Nov. 9 through Nov. 15.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Bradley J. Newton, 34, of East Northport, was involved in a multi-vehicle crash at Scudder and Reservoir avenues at around midnight Nov. 11, police said. Dispatch reported Newton's car sustained heavy damage to its front, and Newton drove off east on Scudder Avenue, police said. Police found Newton outside of a black 2008 Mazda CX9 on June Avenue, police said. Newton's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and he was very unsteady on his feet, police said. Newton couldn't perform the field sobriety tests, police said. Officers determined Newton crashed into a parked car. Newton was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI: one prior (an E felony), DWI: one prior, leaving the scene of an incident and improper lane use.
  • Kendrick Smith, 43, of Smithtown, was driving a gray 2015 Dodge Ram and speeding eastbound on Fort Salonga Road at 11:10 p.m. Nov. 15, police said. The officer who stopped Smith smelled marijuana in his car, police said. Smith admitted he had a small amount of marijuana in his car and handed the officer a clear baggy holding a green leafy substance, police said. The substance tested positive for THC, the main ingredient of marijuana, police said. Smith was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, speeding: posted zone and no/expired inspection certificate.

Incidents

  • Police responded to Main Street on Nov. 9 for a report of a neighbor dispute. A woman told police her neighbor started a thread on "Northport Local Neighbor" regarding the woman's barking dog. The woman said other people posted replies to the thread that made her nervous. Police spoke with the neighbor, who said she did start the thread, but didn't add any comments that would be considered criminal. An officer asked the neighbor if she could remove the thread, to which she agreed. The woman was satisfied.
  • A sick raccoon reported in a Waterside Avenue home's driveway was euthanized and disposed of on Nov. 9.
  • A woman reported bank account fraud on Nov. 9. Her account had an unspecified amount of money withdrawn from it without her permission. She said the bank would refund all fraudulent withdrawals, but it requested the police report for documentation purposes.
  • A guitar found on Steers Beach on Nov. 9 was turned into police headquarters.
  • An injured deer was reported on Ocean Avenue on the morning of Nov. 10. The deer was found dead by police. It was moved to the side of the road to be removed.
  • A man got into an argument with someone on Main Street about wearing a mask on Nov. 10. The complainant told police that the man bumped him "with his large belly" and left.
  • Police responded to PetPort for a report of an irate customer on Nov. 11. The business owner told police she advised the customer that his dog was aggressive and suggested a veterinarian cut the nails. The man allegedly became irate and started to yell and curse at the owner. She told him to leave and never come back. Police spoke with the man, who said he didn't like how the owner was talking to him. The officer told the man a trespass affidavit was completed, and he'd be arrested if he returned. He agreed and left the area.
  • A raccoon showing clear signs of distemper on Dolphin Lane was euthanized and disposed of on Nov. 12.
  • A supposedly-sick raccoon was reported in a Sailfish Place back yard on Nov. 12. Police was able to determine the raccoon was not sick and got it to leave the yard.
  • A raccoon showing clear signs of distemper on Mariners Lane was euthanized and disposed of on Nov. 13.
  • Police responded to Cairo Avenue at 11:15 p.m. Nov. 14 for a large party with no social distancing. The resident agreed to turn the music off and end the party.
  • A loud party was reported at Fifth Avenue around midnight Nov. 15. Five teens were standing around a camp fire. The teens agreed to put the fire out and go inside.
