Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Turns Through Red Light
A Rite-Aid employee and Hallmark store manager got into an argument about parking spaces, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from April 19 through April 25.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Daniel Kalata, 32, of Nesconset, was driving a Subaru northbound on Laurel Avenue around 11:30 p.m. April 23 when a Northport police officer saw him stop at a red light before making a left turn through the red light, police said. Kalata then drove westbound on Main Street and crossed over the solid double-yellow lane markers, police said. Police interviewed Kalata and said his breath smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and his eyes were
glassy and bloodshot. Kalata was very unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. Kalata was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, driving while intoxicated, passed a red traffic signal light and unsafe lane change.
Incidents
- A woman on April 20 reported a letter she received from the State of Alabama Unemployment Office, claiming she's eligible for benefits and that her account was activated. She told police she never filed for such benefits and has also contacted the office in Alabama to report the letter. The woman has not lost any money at the time of her report.
- Fireworks were reportedly shot off on Woodbine Avenue around 9:30 p.m. April 20. Police found remnants of the fireworks in the parking lot but the people who shot them off had left.
- Wood, rope and an anchor were found on a man's vehicle at Village Dock on April 21. The man said there was no damage to his vehicle.
- Construction work was reported on Dolphin Lane at 7:25 a.m. April 21 — before the 8 a.m. legal start time allowed by village code.
- Construction work was reported on Laurel Street at 7:31 a.m. April 21 — before the 8 a.m. legal start time allowed by village code.
- Police were called to Oak Street for a report of a man carrying an object believed to be a firearm on April 21. The person was carrying an umbrella.
- An injured deer was euthanized by police on Nautilus Avenue on April 22. The highway department was notified to remove the deer.
- Police went to Fort Salonga Road on April 22 to settle a parking argument. A Rite-Aid employee said she parks her vehicle away from the busier stalls and under the lights in front of Hallmark for safety. The Hallmark store manager said the woman parks her vehicle in front of his store on purpose and takes up two spaces. Police told the woman to only use one space when parking. The Hallmark manager was advised to contact the property manager about assigned parking spots for his employees.
- A man on April 22 reported a case of identity fraud. He told police he received a NYS unemployment benefit claim in the mail despite not applying for one. The man, at the time of his report, had not lost money or experienced any unauthorized withdrawals from his account.
- A drunken man fell off his bike and suffered a cut above his right eye on Main Street around 1 p.m. April 22, police said. The man said he did not lose consciousness. He was brought to Huntington Hospital.
- Someone tried to file unemployment benefits under a woman's name, the woman told police on April 23. She contacted the NYS Department of Labor and the banking institutions. She didn't lose any money.
- A woman on April 23 reported a potential identity fraud. She told police she received a NYS unemployment benefit claim in the mail despite not applying for one. The man, at the time of his report, had not lost money or experienced any unauthorized withdrawals from his account.
- A man in his 50s, who was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and driving a black sedan on Main Street around 4:30 p.m. April 23, pulled to the side of the road and asked a girl if she needed a ride. She continued walking, and the car left the area. Her step-father filed a police report.
- A black wallet holding various cards and a license was turned in to Northport Police Headquarters on April 24.
- Two youths were seen by police riding an ATV on Main Street and into Municipal Lot #1 around 2:30 p.m. April 24. Police stopped the youths, who said they were coming to the village from their house to meet their friends, and that they had no way of getting there besides the ATV. The driver's father was called to remove the ATV with his truck. Everyone involved was warned and admonished, and police advised them of the consequences if something similar happened in the future.
- Loud music was being played on School Street around 11:20 p.m. April 24. The homeowner agreed to lower the music.
- A drunken man was brought from Northside Delicatessen & Gourmet Catering to Huntington Hospital around 10 a.m. April 25.
- Police on April 25 found a vehicle at Britannia Yachting Center that was wanted in connection with a hit-and-run reported at Del Vino Vineyards. Northport police stayed with the driver until Suffolk police arrived and brought the driver back to the crash.
- A woman was reportedly knocking on Main Street apartment doors while refusing to leave around 7:30 p.m. April 25. Police found her sitting on the stairs. The woman told police she
was on the phone with her boyfriend and was upset because he is deployed overseas. The woman had her friend's phone and could not find her. Police found her friend at Scudder Avenue. They reached their other friend, who was able to drive them home.
