Northport Police Blotter: Man Charged With DWI
An officer saw the man backing onto a road unsafely and swerving out of his lane, police say. He also refused a breath test, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Dec. 7 through Dec. 13.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Burak Ugur, 27, of Huntington, was driving a 2008 Mercedes Benz at 10:30 p.m. Dec. 13 when an officer saw him backing unsafely from Gilbert Avenue onto Fort Salonga Road, police said. The officer watched as Ugur drove west on Fort Salonga Road, and he swerved over the double-yellow line several times, police said. Police stopped Ugur on Fort Salonga Road and Lincoln Avenue, and Ugur's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred, he was very unsteady on his feet, and he performed poorly on a field sobriety test, police said. Ugur refused to take a breath test, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, unsafe lane change and backing unsafely.
Incidents
- A phone scam was reported from Fifth Avenue on Dec. 8.
- Police responded to Fort Salonga Road for a report of a woman taking a dog on Dec. 9. A man told police a woman took his dog from his driveway. Police received a phone call from a local veterinarian who said the dog was dropped off to them. The woman who took the dog thought it was lost and brought it to Island Vet in Huntington Station.
- Two people were using the ball field at Steers Park when their vehicles were locked in. Police helped release the people and their vehicles. The incident happened Dec. 9.
- A dog got loose on Scudder Place on Dec. 11. The dog was found by police and returned to his owner. The officer warned and admonished the dog's owner.
- Someone went to police headquarters to report a road rage incident on Dec. 11. The driver said while they were headed from Kings Park to Northport Village, a woman was driving behind them with her high beams on. The drivers pulled over and had a quick argument. The driver wanted to report the incident for informational purposes.
- A vehicle struck the storefront of Near King Laundry Corporation on Fort Salonga Road at 1:50 p.m. Dec. 12. The driver agreed to fix the damage without getting insurance involved. The store's front door sustained a broken window.
- A group of kids was riding ATVs and dirtbikes on Maple Avenue on Dec. 12. The three youths were found in a nearby garage. They told police they were just testing out a bike they got fixed. The group was warned and admonished by police about riding in the street.
- Larceny as a result of a phone scam was reported by a village resident on Dec. 13.
- A band was playing in Village Park on the afternoon of Dec. 13. An officer told a band member that playing in a band within the park is a violation of the village code. The band player was warned and admonished.
