Northport Police Blotter: Man Charged With DWI
ALSO: Police were called multiple times on solicitors from Verizon who did not have village permits, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 11 through Jan. 17.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Andrew Fontanetta, 58, of East Northport, was driving a 2003 Dodge southbound on Laurel
Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. Jan. 13 when police said they saw him cross over the double-yellow line while speeding. An officer smelled alcohol on Fontanetta's breath, noticed his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred, he was unsteady on his feet and he performed poorly on several standardized field sobriety tests administered, police said. Fontanetta was arrested and charged with unsafe lane change, driving while intoxicated: BAC reading, driving while intoxicated and speeding: posted zone.
Incidents
- A construction worker told police that a man on Jan. 11 let himself into a home being built by the construction company. The man told the crew that he was attempting to measure for shower doors. The construction owner handed over a picture of the man's vehicle and business card and said the man did not seem mentally sound. He was told to immediately call police if the man was seen around the area again.
- An injured deer was reported on Stony Hollow Road on Jan. 11. Northport police remained until Suffolk police arrived.
- A woman reported that someone in a white or silver SUV stopped in front of her house and knocked on the door, asking for a donation for a charity. The woman felt the person was suspicious. Police told her to call back if the person returned. The incident happened Jan. 13.
- A possible identity fraud case was reported on Norwood Avenue on Jan. 13. A woman said she received a New York State Unemployment Benefit Card in the mail even though she never applied for one. She said she hasn't lost any money and hasn't been advised of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. She told police she is trying to contact the Department of Labor to resolve the issue.
- A woman on Maple Avenue reported a potential identity scam on Jan. 14. She told police she was contacted by Apple to tell her a computer she ordered was scheduled for delivery later that day. However, she did not order a computer and believed someone stole her identity to buy it. The woman reached out to Apple to cancel her order, as well as her credit card companies to check for unauthorized charges. She has not sustained any financial loss, and no new accounts were opened in her name.
- A man was reportedly going around and knocking on doors on Fairwind Court on Jan. 14. Police interviewed the man on Bayview Avenue, who told them he worked for Verizon and was attempting to solicit and sell products. He showed police his Verizon identity card. The officer warned and admonished the employee that it was against village code to solicit without a permit. He agreed to leave. Police searched the area and found a second Verizon employee, who was also warned and admonished.
- Police responded to Norwood Avenue for a woman who reported potential credit card fraud. She told police she was contacted by Wells Fargo in regards to an attempted charge on an expired credit card. The woman was told the charge was never processed and the bank would follow up. She did not sustain any financial loss. The officer gave the woman contact information for the major credit bureaus so she could have them monitor her accounts.
- Police responded to Oak Street for a report of solicitors on Jan. 15. An officer found the same person they spoke with the day before. The Verizon employee was unaware he was still in Northport Village due to the lack of information he received from his superiors. He agreed to get picked up and leave the area.
- Police responded to Franklin Court for a report of ding-dong-ditching. The caller was with the teenager who rang his doorbell and tried to run away. The kid was warned and admonished by police, and the kid's parents were advised. The incident happened Jan. 15.
- Racing vehicles were reported on Waterside Avenue and in the parking lot of Crab Meadow Beach on Jan. 16.
- A dead raccoon was found on the side of Sea Cove Road on Jan. 16. The raccoon was disposed of by police.
- Police responded to Scudder Place on Jan. 16 for a report of a person taking video. The person was soliciting for Verizon. The employee was told he needed to have a village permit, and he agreed to leave until he had one.
- A man on Jan. 16 reported that kids were knocking on his Woodhull Court door and running through his back yard the previous evening. The man was told by police to call when the incident is ongoing next time.
- A woman and group of kids on bikes were arguing on Main Street on Jan. 16. The kids were warned and admonished about riding their bikes on the sidewalk with pedestrians.
- Officers helped temporarily repair the vehicle of a driver whose ride became disabled on Jan. 17. The officers helped the man get home.
