Northport Police Blotter: Man Gets Charged With DWI

An officer found an opened bottle of liquor on the passenger seat, as well as empty small liquor bottles in the car, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from June 7 through June 13.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Anthony Diaz, 31, of Northport, was driving a 2007 Acura when police said he was seen blocking the roadway northbound on Ocean Avenue while stopped and with an expired New York state registration. An officer saw vomit next to the driver's side door, on the steering wheel, and on Diaz's shirt and lap, police said. The officer also saw empty small liquor bottles in the driver's side door compartment and an opened bottle of liquor on the passenger seat, police said. Police interviewed Diaz, whose breath smelled of alcohol, had glassy and bloodshot eyes, slurred and sluggish speech, and who was very unsteady on his feet, police said. Diaz performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. Diaz was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, driving while intoxicated, operating unregistered motor vehicle on highway, and parking violations.

Incidents

  • A woman went to police headquarters on June 8 to report a civil matter. She told police that, three years ago, she had given her dog up to a family due to work commitments, and she was unable to care for the dog as a result. She has since returned from her commitment and is in the process of attempting to get her dog back. The woman has a lawyer representing her. She said she received an email from the man who currently has possession of the dog and wishes he would communicate through his lawyer, not through her. The woman wanted the incident documented. Police spoke with the man, who said he emailed the woman in order to try and resolve the issue but said he will only go through the lawyer involved with the case moving forward.
  • Police responded to Fort Salonga Road for a report of a man and woman yelling. On arrival, the mother told police that she and her boyfriend might have been talking loud because their child had ingested an unknown amount of children's liquid Zyrtec. Poison Control told her to bring the child to the nearest hospital. Northport Rescue brought the child to Huntington Hospital. The incident happened June 8.
  • A vagrant was reportedly walking around Seymour's Boat Yard on June 10. A caller told police he wants the person to never return to the premises again. A trespass affidavit was filled out.
  • A brown wallet was found in Village Park on June 10, though the owner could not be reached by police.
  • An intoxicated man was found laying on the sidewalk of Main Street and throwing up on June 11. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
  • A man was reportedly sitting in the middle of the parking lot of Weekday Nursery School on June 11. He agreed to leave when police arrived.
  • A man was reportedly harassing people as they walked by Village Dock on June 11. The dockmaster told police that people were getting uncomfortable with the man trying to talk to them. Police spoke with the man, who said he was sitting on the dock, but he agreed to leave.
  • Police responded to Village Dock around 11:20 p.m. for a report of a man harassing boaters. The man told police that the boaters were harassing him. The man agreed to leave the dock for the night.
  • Police responded to Main Street for a report of an intoxicated man who was trying to ride a bicycle but kept falling off. The man refused any medical attention and continued to walk home.
  • Police responded to Village Dock at 1:07 a.m. June 12 for a report of a man harassing boaters. The man told police he went for a swim and was leaving the area. The man was brought to a train station as per his request.
  • A potential identity theft case was reported on June 12. The man told police he had reported identity theft in the past and had his credit card frozen a month ago, but he keeps receiving application letters and credit applications.
  • A group was reportedly fighting at Village Dock at 10:15 p.m. June 12. The dockmaster told an officer that a boat owner was told there was no room on the dock for his boat, but he refused to leave and docked his boat anyway. The boat owner and his wife then became very nasty towards the dockmaster, cursing at her and calling her names. Several bystanders began arguing with the boat owner after seeing how he spoke to the dockmaster. The boat owner and his wife were told multiple times to stay on their boat or they would not be allowed back to tie up in the future.
  • A man fainted at Northport Deli on June 13. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
  • A group of kids was reportedly harassing people at Village Park on June 13. The caller told police that three youths were riding their bikes in the park and were bothering him and several other dog walkers. Police spoke with the youths, who agreed to ride their bikes on the opposite side of the park to avoid further conflict.
