Northport Police Blotter: More Unemployment Scams Reported

ALSO: A man reported his home was egged, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from March 8 through March 14.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A woman told police she saw someone in her neighbor's house while they were away, but it turned out to be the homeowner's next-door neighbor who was watering plants for them. The incident happened March 8.
  • A couple of people approached police at Fort Salonga Road at 12:40 a.m. March 10 saying they needed to find a place to stay the night. An officer tried contacting emergency social services but was told it was too late to get into a shelter for the night, and the only option was to take the people to a hospital. The officers brought both people to Huntington Hospital.
  • An injured deer found on Locust Road was euthanized by police on March 10. The Northport Highway Department was notified.
  • Someone tried using someone else's identity to obtain unemployment benefits, a complainant told police on March 12. The person took action to secure his personal information and had not lost any money at the time.
  • A woman on March 13 reported that someone she didn't know was applying for unemployment by using her name. She also said a different person she doesn't live with had paperwork delivered to her home. A police officer responded to the other address, and the resident refused to talk with the officer at the door. The paperwork for the person who refused to talk to the officer was destroyed.
  • A man reported that a group of kids on bikes on Main Street were being disrespectful and cursing at him when he honked his horn for them to move out of the way on March 13. The man filed a report for informational purposes and was advised to call police if there were any further issues with the kids.
  • A woman on March 13 reported unauthorized phone charges, as she was being billed monthly for a phone she lost two years ago. Police advised her to call her cell phone provider to cancel the plan and recoup some of the funds.
  • A Clipper Drive home was egged, a homeowner reported on March 13. A person or people hit a window on the side of his house with multiple eggs, he told police. He also heard a vehicle speed off from in front of his house. There was no property damage, and police could not find the vehicle in the area.
