Northport Police Warns Of Flooding, Strong Winds From Hurricane Jose

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the area.

The Northport Police Department is warning residents that Hurricane Jose will impact the area.

Hurricane Jose is forecasted to pass east of Long Island from Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. The storm will not hit land. However, residents should still prepare for coastal flooding, heavy rain and high winds.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the area. The watch may be upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning as Jose approaches Long Island.

What to expect:

High tides and coastal flooding— tides will be 2 to 4 feet above normal. Jose will prevent water from receding the low tide phase. Residents on the immediate shoreline or in an area prone to coastal flooding should prepare for the conditions. High tide will take place from 11:07 a.m. and 11:29 p.m. on Tuesday and at 11:52 a.m. on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall and street flooding— 2 to 3 inches or rain can be expected, possibly causing street flooding. The Northport Police Department advises residents to not approach on foot or drive through any flooded waters. Any significant flooding in Northport Village can reported to the department at (631)261-7500.

Strong winds— NE wins at 25 to 35 miles per hour are expected with gusts approaching 50 miles per hour. This may cause trees to fall and bring down power lines. Police advises residents to be aware of their surroundings and to not approach any downed wires. Call 911 and PSEG at (800)490-0075 to reported downed wires or power outages.
