Obituary: ​Wilbur Scherer, Oldest Active Member of Northport FD, Dies at 89

Services will be held this week.

Wilbur Scherer, Sr., a longtime member of the Northport Fire Department and World War II Army Veteran passed away Monday at age 89.

Scherer served the Northport Community for 57 years after joining the department on Feb. 2, 1950. He was the oldest active member of the Northport Fire Department and the last member of the Northport Fire Department who was sworn-in at the original fire house, which now serves as Northport Police headquarters and Village Hall.

He was made an “Honorary Chief” in 2014 in honor of more than 50 years of service and was given the honor of fire police firefighter of the year in 1993.

“Wilbur was a true friend, mentor, gentleman and inspiration to all members of the Fire department and he will be deeply missed by all,” the Northport Volunteer Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Beloved husband of Marilyn A. (nee Biele) Scherer. Loving father of JoAnn (Raul) Saleme, and Wilbur (Catherine) Scherer, Jr. Caring grandfather of Elizabeth (Nicholas) Zelnick, Jonathan S. Saleme, and William R. (Nicole Perkins) Scherer. Fond brother of Paul (Doris) Scherer.

Visitation will be held Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, located at 5 Laurel Ave.

Firematic services will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. Funeral prayer will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Northport Rural Cemetery, with U.S. Army Military Honors.
