Storm Wallops Northport, Flooding Streets, Downing Trees: PHOTOS

A severe thunderstorm rumbled through Long Island on Sunday. Northport saw flooding and downed trees.

NORTHPORT, NY — A strong thunderstorm packing strong winds, heavy rain and hail slammed into Long Island on Sunday, and Northport was hit particularly hard. Photos and video posted to social media showed cars and SUVs wading through a couple feet of flooded streets in and around Main Street in the downtown area. Trees and wires were also downed in the area, leaving as many as 1,300 local customers were left without power, according to PSEG Long Island.

"PSEG Long Island is reporting approximately 23,834 of its 1.1 million customers across Long Island and the Rockaways are currently without service," the utility said in a 5:30 a.m. update Monday. "As of 5:15 a.m., the utility has restored service to more than 46,800 customers impacted by yesterday’s significant storm."
