The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Long Island. It will be in effect from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The island will likely see 1-3 inches of snow with the highest totals expected in Suffolk County.

"The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute," the advisory says. "Plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibilities."

Rain is expected to mix with snow early Wednesday before turning to all snow around 2 a.m. The snow will taper off from west to east late Wednesday morning into the early afternoon.

Exactly how much snow is able to accumulate on roads is dependent on how quickly these surfaces cool and the intensity of snowfall, according to AccuWeather. Most road surfaces will have had a chance to warm up through Tuesday with highs near 60 degrees for a second straight day.

"Even if roads do not see as much accumulation as grass, temperatures will be near freezing and lighter accumulation on roads and reduced visibility in moderate snow are likely to create hazardous travel," the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion Tuesday morning.
