Titanic Survivor’s Estate Is Steeped in History
This iconic Hudson Valley home is on the market for $1.8 million.
NYACK, NY — On April 15, 1912, the R.M.S Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into its maiden voyage. Margaret Welles Swift (of the Swift Meat Packing Company) survived the tragedy, but the blueprints for her Hudson Valley home went down with the ship.
Duplicate prints were eventually found and the 13-acre property, perched on 159 River Road in Grand View-on-Hudson, was completed in 1916. Known as Overledge, the home is an exquisite representation of early 20th Century architecture, and is steeped in history.
After her husband passed away, Swift sold the property and according to Terry Talley's book, "Oh, What a Grand View," subsequent owners included Alba Martinez, the brother-in-law to Rafael Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic, who reportedly used the property as a hideout.
