2nd Worker's Body Found After Upper Brookville Sand Wall Collapse

UPPER BROOKVILLE, NY — The body of a second worker has been recovered from an Upper Brookville work site where a sand wall collapsed Tuesday afternoon, trapping two people under several feet of dirt.

Rescue crews swarmed the area of Wolver Hollow and Pine Valley roads around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police sent a helicopter to the work site after hearing reports that two workers ages 57 and 45 were trapped at the bottom of a 30-foot trench.

The workers were installing septic rings at a private home. While both men were in the hole, the wall of dirt and sand "gave way," police Lt. Richard LeBrun told News 12. The men were covered by 5 feet of sand.

The 45-year-old worker was pulled from the trench and declared dead by medics Tuesday night. Rescue teams were forced to evacuate the trench when more sections of the sand wall threatened to collapse.

On Wednesday evening, police announced the 57-year-old worker's body was found and taken to the Nassau County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The workers names weren't immediately released.
