Charles Wang, Former New York Islanders Owner, Dies At 74

OYSTER BAY, NY — Charles Wang, the former owner of the New York Islanders hockey team and founder of a tech company, has died. He was 74. Wang died Sunday in Oyster Bay, his attorney John McEntee told media outlets in a statement. A cause of death wasn't released but he was surrounded by his family, McEntee said in a statement.

With the Islanders future looking cloudy, Wang bought the team in 2000 "in recognition of the team’s importance to Long Island, despite having previously attended only one hockey game," McEntee said.

Wang was the majority owner of the team until 2016. He then became a minority co-owner. Wang moved to America with his family as a child after his birth in Shanghai, China, on Aug. 19, 1944. Newsday reported he attended Brooklyn Technical High School and graduated from Queens College with a BS in Mathematics and Physics.

He founded Computer Associates, now called CA Technologies, in 1976 and was chairman and CEO until 2000. He is survived by his wife Nancy Li; he is three children Kimberly, Jasmine and Cameron; his mother, Mary; brothers, Anthony and Francis; grandchildren, Charles, Kingsley and Kendall; and his nieces and a nephew.

In 1976, Wang founded Computer Associates International, known as CA and now called CA Technologies, serving until 2000 as chairman and chief executive.
