Police ID Distressed Swimmer Dead In Nassau

The woman, who is from Connecticut, died on Saturday, Nassau police say.

UPDATED 3:30 p.m. Tuesday: The woman was identified as Tawanda Kali, 47, of Stanford, Connecticut, Nassau police said Tuesday.

CENTRE ISLAND, NY — Homicide detectives are investigating after a distressed swimmer was found in the water near Centre Island and died at a hospital.

Nassau County police were called around 9 a.m. Saturday for a report of a male and female on a boat in the rear of Montecito Drive. The female became distressed while swimming in the water and a police helicopter was sent to help.

She was taken to a hospital and a doctor declared her dead around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
