EWS Honored at Annual Walk to Defeat ALS

East Woods School Receives Special Recognition for Years of Service to the ALS Walk for a Cure

Oyster Bay, N.Y. –Recently, students from the East Woods School (EWS) in Oyster Bay participated in the 12th annual ALS Walk at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The school, along with Community Service Director, Martine Tawaji received special recognition for years of service to the ALS Walk for a Cure. Similar to years past, dedicated students and staff members unpacked 30 boxes of tee-shirts before organizing and folding them to be distributed to the team captains.

Participating students and staff began the walk with everyone at 11 a.m. After a brisk 3-mile walk, students proceeded to cross the finish line with a smile and remarkable spirit. “Giving back to our community is a fundamental part of the East Woods mission,” said Laura Kang, Head of School. “Participating in the annual ALS Walk contributes towards additional funding for research of this incurable disease.”

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a motor neuron disease that affects an individual’s voluntary movements and can be extremely debilitating to live with. For the past 12 years, East Woods students, families, and faculty members come together to raise funds to help support care service programs, enable cutting-edge research, and advance nationwide advocacy efforts for people with ALS and their families.
