Oyster Bay, N.Y. — Recently, students from the East Woods School in Oyster Bay received a special visit from Wildman Steve Brill—naturalist, environmental educator and author—who spent the day teaching students about the many purposes of the often overlooked plants within our ecosystem.
Steve walked with students through the school’s 46-acre campus in Oyster Bay and showed the students the many common, renewable, wild, edible and medicinal plants that people mistake for “weeds,” which often get destroyed due to their looks.
Students took notes along their journey, creating trail markers around the campus while learning to identify specific plants and even getting to enjoy some Japanese Yew berries, Asiatic dayflower leaves and Kousa dogwood berries along the way. Students were given the opportunity to learn about the environment while getting in touch with nature.
