OYSTER BAY, NY — The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District has a new budget, and results were also announced in the Board of Education election. The 2020-21 budget passed with 1,787 votes in favor to 1,043 votes against.

Budget Overview

  • Proposed 2020-21 budget: $60.1 million
  • Budget increase: 2.35 percent
  • Tax levy increase: 1.53 percent

Oyster Bay-East Norwhich voters also passed the three other propositions.

Proposition 2 approved the release of existing money from the Technology Reserve Fund to finance the third phase of the district's 1:1 technology initiative. This came at no additional cost to taxpayers. During this phase, mobile devices would be issued to four more grade levels for students to use as a primary instructional tool. This includes incoming students in grades 6, 7, 11 and 12.

Proposition 2 passed with 2,069 votes in favor to 756 against.

Proposition 3 passed with 2,002 votes in favor to 814 against. This measure approved releasing existing money from the Capital Reserve Fund to finance improvements at no additional cost to taxpayers. This includes replacing two playground surfaces at Vernon and air conditioning in the high school gymnasium.

Proposition 4, meanwhile, passed with 1,639 votes in favor to 1,165 against. This referendum approved reducing the mileage eligibility limits from 1.25 miles to zero — also known as universal busing — for K-6 students and from 1.25 miles to .5 miles for 7-12 students. The measure came with a cost of about $160,000 for the 2020-21 school year. The district said the proposition markedly increases transportation eligibility for students and puts the district in line with mileage limits in neighboring districts.

School Board

In the race for school board, Darren Gerbosi defeated Michael Lacapria by a vote of 1,201 to 1049.

Library Budget Vote

The library budget was passed with a vote of 1,991 in favor to 800 against.

Library Trustee Vote

Frank Murdock ran unopposed for library trustee, winning with 707 votes.
