OYSTER BAY, NY — The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Highways on Sunday began pretreating roadways with sand and salt to prevent black ice from forming and to ensure a safe commute, according to a news release.

“Our snow-fighting crew is at the ready to plow and salt roadways. The Town Department of Public Safety is closely monitoring the storm and has put assets in place to assist residents should the need arise,” Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated Sunday.

The town has 10,000 tons of road salt and sand on hand and its snow-fighting crews include more than 300 plow/salt trucks, pick-ups with plows and sanders, payloaders and other equipment that cover nearly 1,000 lane miles throughout the town, Saladino said.

Highway supervisors will use Global-positioning systems to monitor snowplows to determine when plows are down and where trucks are operating in order to ensure the town’s crews “are working at full capacity to make the roads safer for our residents as quickly and efficiently as possible, while also safeguarding the safety of our snow-fighting crew,” he stated.

Residents can find up-to-date information on closures or changes to town programs on the town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com, where residents can also sign up for emergency notifications. The Town’s Public Safety Department can be reached at any time by calling (516) 677-5350.
