Police: 3 Nabbed In Upper Brookville Car Stop Had Stolen Mail
Trio caught driving around Upper Brookville Thursday morning "had no explanation of why" stolen mail was in their possession.
UPPER BROOKVILLE, NY — Three men caught driving around Upper Brookville in an early morning traffic stop by an Old Brookville officer early Thursday morning had a pile of stolen unopened mail, Nassau County police said.
Police said that about 2:20 a.m. on Thursday a police officer from Old Brookville was on routine patrol and saw a black 2020 Chrysler make an improper right turn on Route 25A near Farmwoods Lane, prompting him to activate his emergency lights and direct the car to stop. The officer, who was aware of recent reports of stolen mail from residential mailboxes, saw “a large amount of unopened mail” in the car and the three men inside “had no explanation of why it was in their possession,” police stated in a news release on Friday.

Police said that a “thorough investigation was conducted” with Old Brookville Police, as well as Nassau County’s robbery squad, fraud and forgery unit, and the second squad, and investigators from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the news release stated.
All three men, Yeasin Arafat, 29, and Rafsan Rahman, 20, both of Brooklyn, and Mohammed Islam, 26, of Queens were charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of personal identification information. They were additionally charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance for having methamphetamine, according to a police spokesman.

All together Rahman is charged with seven counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and 10 counts of unlawful possession of personal identification Information. Islam is charged with four counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and four counts of unlawful possession of personal identification information. They were both issued appearance tickets returnable to First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 15.
Arafat is being charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, five counts of criminal possession of stolen property, five counts of unlawful possession of personal identification information, and three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He will be arraigned on Friday in Mineola.
