Schuellein-McGovern to compete in US Olympic Track and Field Trials

Locust Valley resident to compete in US Olympic Track and Field Trials

Locust Valley, NY, 31 May, 2016 – Locust Valley resident Loretta Schuellein-McGovern has qualified to compete in the 2016 Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 20 kilometer (12.4 miles) race walk.

On May 22nd Schuellein-McGovern placed 2nd at the Long Island championships in a time of 1:46:43—over a minute under the qualifying standard of 1:48:00. The race was won by 2012 Olympian and U.S. record-holder Maria Michta-Coffey of Farmingville in 1:46:42.8.

Schuellein-McGovern and Michta-Coffey will face each other again–along with a dozen or so other qualifiers–at the Olympic Track & Field Trials which will take place on June 30th in Salem, Oregon. That race will select the U.S. team of three women who will compete for Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The Manhasset High School English teacher and mother of three last qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2008, before the birth of her three sons. Her husband, Dave McGovern, placed 11th in the men’s Olympic Trials in the 50 kilometer (31 miles) event in February.
