Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Scientists

East Woods Upper School Students Compete in Annual Science Symposium

Oyster Bay, N.Y. – Recently, students from the East Woods School displayed an array of experiments at the annual Science Symposium. This year’s projects ranged from experiments on the observation of dental staining to an experiment on various meat thawing techniques and how much bacteria is produced on them. The students spend the time leading up to the Science Symposium learning about the scientific process as a whole and then put their hypotheses to the test.

“The Science Symposium is an event that our students look forward to year-round,” said Laura Kang, Head of School at East Woods. “The event encourages students to expand their knowledge of the scientific process.” The students are judged by PhDs, MDs, and post-doctoral scientists from the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

The students at East Woods spend countless hours for two months hypothesizing, experimenting, and coming to conclusions. Outstandingly, these experiments are done by students independently. Students are expected to research a topic of interest, form a hypothesis and then conduct the appropriate experiments to test their hypothesis.

The judging process for each young scientist included an interview by a panel of judges as well as a question and answer session in which the judges would ask questions about the topic the student chose to research. As the event came to a close, a winner from each grade level was chosen as well as one overall Symposium winner.

This year’s winning Science Symposium young scientists and their projects were:
