Hudson Valley Heat Advisories Issued Through Tuesday, Wednesday

Heat index values up to 97 are expected, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for the Hudson Valley. For Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester, where thousands of homes and businesses are still without power, the advisory stretches until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

For Dutchess and Ulster counties, the current heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The heat won't break overnight in the lower Hudson Valley, with temperatures staying in the low 70s and humidity levels very high.

With the heat index in the high 90s, heat illnesses are a real danger, forecasters warn.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

The New York State Department of Public Service will be monitoring electric system conditions and overseeing utility response to any situations that may arise. If necessary, DPS will activate the Peak Load Reduction Program for all New York State agencies. In addition, the New York Independent System Operator will activate their voluntary Emergency Response Demand Program to curtail load as necessary.

State Parks beaches and pools remain open. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, density reductions of 50 percent of total capacity are in place. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
