BUCHANAN, NY — There will be a regular quarterly test of the emergency notification sirens at Indian Point.

The test of the system will be between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 11.

As part of the test, sirens will sound at full volume for about four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties.

Indian Point officials said this is only a test, and the public is not required to respond during the siren sounding.

The sirens are not a signal to evacuate. A spokesperson said, in an actual emergency, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local Emergency Alert System radio or television station for information and direction.

Indian Point Energy Center is no longer producing electricity. It operated from 1962 to 2021.

Unit 1 was permanently shut down in 1974. Unit 2 stopped producing electricity April 30, 2020, and Unit 3 was shut down April 30.

Units 2 and 3 averaged about 17 million megawatt-hours of electricity each year, or about 25 percent of the power used annually in Westchester County and New York City, according to a spokesperson.
