Man Dies Fleeing State Police On Stolen Motorcycle In Cortlandt

The chase down Route 9 went from the Annsville Circle to the Croton Point Avenue exit.

CORTLANDT, NY — A Brooklyn man who crashed a stolen motorcycle during a police chase through Cortlandt Sunday afternoon died at Westchester County Medical Center.

At 4:15 p.m., a New York State trooper from the Cortlandt barracks identified a stolen 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle and tried to make a traffic stop at the Annsville Circle, police said.

Instead, the operator of the motorcycle immediately fled southbound on Route 9 at high speed, police said.

North of the Croton Point Avenue exit in the village of Croton-on-Hudson, the motorcycle collided with a Nissan Altima also headed south. The operator was ejected from the motorcycle.

Life-saving measures were initiated at the scene by troopers, and then taken over by responding EMS personnel. However, the motorcycle operator, Damian J. Simmons, 38, of Brooklyn, NY, died after being taken to Westchester Medical Center, police said.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Westchester County Police Department, Croton Police Department, Croton Fire Department, as well as the Croton and Ossining EMS.

The incident is still under investigation.
