New York Ranked 5th For Jobs Recovery: Report

The Hudson Valley's recovery continues, according to the state labor department.

Nationally, despite the fact that the coronavirus pandemic has now been raging across the country for nearly a year, new unemployment claims decreased week-over-week on Jan. 1, and were 89 percent below the peak during the COVID-19 pandemic, according a new report from WalletHub.

To identify which states’ workforces are experiencing the quickest recovery from COVID-19, WalletHub researchers compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

New York's unemployment claims for the first week of January 2021 compared to the start of 2o20 — a 25.28 percent increase — put it 5th in WalletHub's rankings for most thorough recovery.

  • 56,184 jobless claims the week of Jan. 1, 2021 versus 44,846 the week of Jan. 1, 2020
  • 5th quickest recovery in the U.S.

The Hudson Valley's recovery continues, according to the most recent data from the New York Department of Labor. November numbers, while still higher than the previous year, were far below April's.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 9.2 percent in October to 8.4 percent in November 2020.

Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, for New York and every other state are based on statistical regression models specified by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These are the most up-to-date estimates of persons employed and unemployed by place of residence. Estimates are available for New York State, labor market regions, metropolitan areas, counties and municipalities with population of at least 25,000.
