Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch Home of the Week: Feb. 10 Edition

People love “Best of” lists. If there was a “Best of Local Homes” list, this classic 1898 Queen Anne Victorian, located on 222 Walnut Street in Peekskill, would be on it.

An Historic Preservation Award winner, this eye candy features four bedrooms and 2.5 baths within a 2300-square footprint that sitting on a one-third acre lot. Everything that should be authentic has been restored. Everything that should be modernized has been done tastefully, keeping with the rest of the interior. 

Photo #1 shows the wrap around porch, with just the right amount of gingerbread detailing and fish-scale roofing, blooming trees and wisteria and comfy hammock. Next, we see the front from the right, showing the brick lined driveway leading to a two-car, two-story carriage house. The white picket fence can be closed to complete that finished look.

Picture #3 begins our interior tour. Note the remarkable detail, from paint and wallpaper to lighting, moldings, banisters and wainscoting. The front living room is next. Irregularly shaped rooms are common in authentic Victorians. This spacey room shows how successfully one can design around challenging design elements. Pocket doors are not shown.

In the dining room which comfortably seats eight, you will see a period radiator, a decorative fireplace and a ceiling medallion above the chandelier.

Photo #6, which doesn't show the large stainless steel refrigerator, does give some idea of the size of the kitchen and demonstrates how nicely all modern amenities have been incorporated into “Maybelle”.

Upstairs, photo #7 gives a view of the master bedroom, which is one of four bedrooms on this floor. It has an attached bath.

Older homes are difficult to insulate. Take a look at the unique solution Jimmy Garofalo came up with; modern insulation encased by billowing black and clear plastic sheeting, which allows this open space, featuring wide-plank flooring, to show off brick and wood construction elements.

The large, ornately fenced patio is slate, with brick and stone accents. Coming to the end of our “tour”, you find a nice-size back yard with a brick path leading to enclosed garden on the right. This photo also shows some detail of the rear deck.

The last two photos show the slate roofed two-story carriage house (aka garage), with the garden on right, and a view from the carriage house to the street.
