PEEKSKILL, NY — An acting city manager was appointed to serve in Peekskill until the city manager returns to the job.

City Manager Andrew Stewart is recovering from a stroke-induced car accident and cannot perform his duties, city officials said, so Comptroller Matt Alexander was appointed Friday to fill in as acting city manager.

The resolution authorizing the appointment said that Stewart had not designated a subordinate as acting city manager, and the Common Council had to step in.

He said he was "a little tired and bruised and traumatized from my stroke-induced crashing of our sweet old pickup into a very big, hard rock."

Stewart said he was going to be taking it easy for a little while.
