Severe Thunderstorm Watch For Hudson Valley

A strong thunderstorm is moving through with lightning and torrential rainfall.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties.

At 206 PM EDT, a very slow moving strong thunderstorm was located near Montgomery, or near Walden, moving east at 20 mph. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible with this storm.

Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Wallkill, Plattekill, Wappingers Falls, Highland, Fishkill, Modena, Marlboro, Lloyd, Gardiner, Tuckers Corner, Forest Glen, Knapps Corner, Dwaarkill, New Hamburg, Glenham, Ireland Corners, Stoneco and Chelsea.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this very slow moving storm, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

The National Weather Service asks residents to listen to NOAA Weather Radio or go to weather.gov on the Internet for more information about the following hazards.

The highest threat of severe thunderstorms is from 3 pm to 8 pm. There is uncertainty on how widespread the coverage of severe storms will be during this time period, but there is a threat forat least isolated severe storms.

The storms could cause:

  • Damaging Wind: (Primary Threat) Wind gusts in excess of 58 mph could damage trees and power lines and result in scattered power outages.
  • 1 “ Hail: (Secondary Threat) Minor damage to motor vehicles and homes. Significant damage to vegetation.
  • Heavy Rainfall: Localized urban and poor drainage flooding possible.
  • Rapid rises on small streams and creeks could occur.
