Two Unions Begin Apprentice Recruitment Drives
The New England Carpenters Training Fund and the Finishing Trades Institute are only looking for a few people.
HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Two regional unions are holding recruitment drives. Both are open for 12 months. Each only seeks a few apprentices, one for glaziers and one for cabinetmakers.
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for The Finishing Trades Institute of New York at Wappingers Falls, will conduct a recruitment from Jan. 23, 2020 through Jan. 21, 2021 for five glazier apprentices.
Please note that the five openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for four recruitment regions, the Capital District, Hudson Valley, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions of the state.

Applications can be obtained at Finishing Trades Institute of New York at 21 Airport Drive, Wappingers Falls, NY from 3 to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.
The Committee requires that applicants:

- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
- Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites required classes at the approved school.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.

The New England Carpenters Training Fund will conduct a recruitment from Feb. 3, 2020 through Feb. 1, 2021 for two cabinetmaker apprentices.
Applications are available online during the recruitment period. Applicants who do not have internet access may visit their local library or nearest New York State Department of Labor Career Center. Applications are also available at the information sessions indicated below.
Prior to submitting an application, applicants are required to attend an information session at the NECTF:

The information session is given on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. If the first Monday falls on a holiday, the information session will occur on the second Monday of that month at 6 p.m. At the conclusion of the information session, a code will be provided, which is required to complete an application. If assistance is required for completing an on-line application, please visit the NECTF, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required at time of application.
- Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which may include:
- Working on scaffolds and in confined spaces.
- Working under conditions of inclement weather, such as rain, snow, cold, heat, and direct sunlight.
- Performing constant repetitive motions.
- Climbing and working from heights.
- Lifting items -minimum of 50 lbs.
- Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
- Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. If applicant tests positive, he/she cannot reapply for one year.
- Must be willing to attend required classes at the approved school.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites (in counties listed below) and required classes at the approved school.
- Must live in the geographical jurisdiction which includes all New York State counties excluding the counties of the five boroughs of New York City (Kings, Bronx, Queens, New York and Richmond).
- Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
