HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The nor'easter has shifted north into the middle of the Hudson Valley, which will bear the brunt overnight and deep into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service extended its storm warning for Dutchess and Ulster counties until 4 p.m. Tuesday, saying the heaviest snow will fall in a band from the mid-Hudson Valley late Monday afternoon. Then, snow will slowly taper to snow showers late Tuesday.

Orange, Rockland, Putnam and northern Westchester counties are not off the hook. The warning is in effect until 6 a.m., and the NWS predicts additional snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches after 4 p.m. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph could lead to downed tree limbs and power outages. Snow will taper off on Tuesday.

In southern Westchester, the coastal flood advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. Minor to locally moderate flooding is expected in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low-lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding. Snow will taper off Tuesday.

For Dutchess and Ulster, snow could fall another 6 to 12 inches to reach a total accumulation of 12 to 18 inches.

Hazardous conditions could affect the Tuesday morning commute with light snow and blowing snow.

While Rockland is lifting the State of Emergency banning travel on all county and local roads for all but essential business at 7 a.m. Tuesday, County Executive Ed Day asked people to wait a bit.

"We recommend a delayed start to any travel tomorrow to give crews added time to clear the roads and urge caution of those who will be traveling as light snow is predicted throughout the day Tuesday," Day said. "This storm has produced dangerous, white-out conditions and I thank all our residents who heeded the warnings to stay off the road; by staying home you’ve allowed our plow drivers the time and space they need to safely do their jobs."
