Amal, a senior, gave a 12-minute PowerPoint presentation followed by five minutes of questions from judges, and placed in the local speaker session at the virtual event on Jan. 30
“Amal has worked hard in the program for the past four years and demonstrated a lot of grit to complete her project, given that COVID-19 made data collection more challenging,” said Frank Tamweber, the science research teacher.
Her research, the “Relationship Between Caregiver Stress and Patient Depression Score in Alzheimer’s Disease,” focused on the mental health of caregivers and how they’re affected by the long term effects of Alzheimer’s disease in patients.

Her research was inspired by her aunt and grandmother.
“When my grandfather was diagnosed, I noticed the differences in how they were affected,” Amal said. “While my grandmother got anxious and overwhelmed, my aunt got frustrated and stressed. The impact of a long term disease like Alzheimer’s on family caregivers was interesting and personal.”
