An Insider's View into The New York Times, A Trip Around the World in 90 Minutes and More Independence Days

Get over that icky "back to work" feeling with the help of 5 Things You Need to Know Today.

1. Yesterday, you celebrated your country’s independence with barbecue, fireworks and flags. Today, Algeria will be marking the 47th anniversary of their independence from France, Cape Verde will be celebrating their 1975 liberation from Portugal and Venezuela will commemorate the 200th anniversary of their 1811 separation from Spain! While methods of marking independence may differ across the globe, one thing’s for sure – there’s no better reason to celebrate than freedom.

2. Georgia O’Keefe viewed nature with her own unique perspective, and so do the 27 participating members of the Color Camera Club of Westchester whose work is featured ArtsWestchester’s “Nature Through the Lens” exhibit. Stroll through the Melvin and Sally Shenkman Gallery from 12-5 p.m. today and enjoy photography ranging from natural landscape scenes to flower portraits. For more information, visit Arts Westchester's website or call (914) 428-4220. Admission is free.

3. Stop the presses! This evening, will screen “Page One: Inside The New York Times” at 7 p.m. along with a Q&A discussion led by guests Bruce Headlam, media desk editor for The New York Times, Andrew Rossi, director of “Page One” and Daniel Pine, executive producer of “Page One.” Pricing is $11 for general admission; Seniors, $9; Students, $9; Child, $8; Picture House members are admitted for free. Visit the Picture House's website or call (914) 738-3161 for more information.

4. Nostalgic for the power-pop laced tunes of the 1960s doo-wop groups? Tomorrow night, you can revisit the Swinging 60s – and pretend you’re an extra in “Beach Blanket Bingo” – by hitting up a concert hosted at New Rochelle’s Hudson Park and Beach. Twirl in the sand to the sugary sounds of “The Pony Tails,” a three-girl singing group backed by a three-piece band, from 5- 9 p.m. This event is sponsored by the New Rochelle Concert Series and will be held at the Bandshell at 94 Hudson Park Road. Visit the website for additional details.

5. Sure, school’s out and your kids may have traded in the classics for “The Hunger Games,” but that doesn’t mean you can’t still expose them to some good old literature this summer. Head over to the “Family Night at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival” tonight at 6 p.m. to watch Mark Brown's madcap adaptation of Jules Verne's “Around the World in 80 Days.” Over the course of 90 minutes, five actors play 39 parts as the hero Phileas Fog tries to win a bet and save his fortunes.
