Ben Hurd Receives Con Edison Scholastic Sports Award

Hurd leads the team in goals and assists and is a leader both on and off the court for his team.

From PMHS: PMHS senior hockey player Ben Hurd has received the prestigious Con Edison Scholastic Sports Award for the week of Jan. 18.

Hurd, a senior captain, has had an outstanding season, scoring 24 goals and notching 12 assists to lead the Pelicans to a 13-1 record and the top ranking in the New York State Sports Writers Association poll. Last season, Hurd was named to the Division 2 All-State First Team, and received All Section and Section 1 Division 2 Player of the Year honors.

“Ben is clearly one of the best people, and players I’ve ever coached,” said Varsity Hockey Coach Ed Witz. “He is an amazing captain and true leader and always comes up with big goals in big spots. I am very fortunate to have coached him.”

In addition to his athletic prowess, Hurd has excelled academically. He is a national merit semifinalist and member of the national math, science and English honor societies. He took home first place in the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and was a semifinalist in the Siemens science competition.

“On and off the ice, Ben has proven himself to be both an outstanding competitor and dedicated student,” said Pelham Athletic Director Steve Luciana. “We are very proud of Ben and his accomplishments and congratulate him, his family and the entire hockey team on receiving this award.”

An interview with Ben will air on WHUD radio, 100.7FM at 5:15 am on Sunday, Jan. 22 and will be available online at www.whud.com. Additionally, an article about Ben will appear in the Journal News on Saturday, Jan. 21.
