Joan Flanagan Shea: Longtime Pelham Manor Resident

Joan Shea was born on April 4, 1927 to Thomas F. and Louise Flanagan in New York City; the following year the family moved to Pelham Manor and later to Pelhamwood.

Mrs. Shea attended Prospect Hill and Colonial Schools, PMHS, Walnut Hill School in Massachusetts and William and Mary College in Virginia.

After graduation she worked at The Daily News, Theodor Swanson Public Relations and Earl Newsome Public Relations.

On September 26, 1953, she married Joseph C. Shea in St. Catharine’s Church, Pelham. They lived in Glen Cove and Plandome, Long Island. After divorcing in 1973, Mrs. Shea and her five children moved to Port Washington, L.I. One day in 1993 while her oldest son Joe, who lived with his family in Pelham Manor, was visiting, he said to her “All right mom, you’ve had your fun, it’s time to come home. Sell the house and come back to Pelham.” So she did, living briefly in New Rochelle before moving to Pelham Manor.

Before MS slowed her down, Mrs. Shea traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and America. She was a volunteer at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. She was a member of the Manor Club for many years even while living on Long Island. To the end she was an avid New York Yankees fan.

She is predeceased by her sons Joseph and Daniel, both of Pelham Manor, both worked at Cantor-Fitzgerald at the World Trade Center, both killed on 9/11/01.

Surviving are her son Thomas Shea and his wife Karen of Edison, NJ; her daughter Kathy Shea and her husband Eric Munson of Pelham Manor; her son Frank Shea of New York City; her daughter-in-law Nancy Shea of Pelham Manor; her daughter-in-law Ellen Meagher of Pelham Manor; her brother Eugene Flanagan and his wife Lucette of Rye, NY and Palm City, Florida. She will be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren.
