The Life and Death of Westchester's Harry Devert

The Washington Post profiles the 32-year-old world traveler, who was killed in Mexico in early 2014.

The incredible life of the late world traveler Harry Devert, who grew up in New Rochelle and Pelham, is the focus of a moving profile in The Washington Post.

Devert, 32, was killed in Mexico in early 2014, and his remains were discovered later in the year. A notorious alleged drug gang leader named Adrián Reyes Cadena, nicknamed “Le Tigre,” was arrested this month and charged with Devert’s murder.

“I still have a lot of unanswered questions,” Devert’s mother, Ann Devert, told The Washington Post, skeptical of the Mexican government’s explanation surrounding his death. “Everything is this vast web of intrigue.”

Devert disappeared in January 2014, while riding his motorcycle in Mexico, and family and friends mounted a search to find him, using social media among other means.

He traveled the world for years, making money as a stock trader for a while to support his adventures.

“I lived adventure through Harry,” Danny Garcia, a close friend of Devert’s, told The Post. “He had enough of it for ten people.”

He was on his way to the World Cup in Brazil, by motorcycle, when he disappeared. One last epic adventure before settling down, according to family and friends.

They tried warning him of the dangers that could lie ahead in Mexico, not to mention that he had just begun to learn how to ride a motorcycle. But Devert was determined to make the trip.

Mexican authorities believe Cadena and his gang mistook Devert for a United States drug enforcement agent and killed him.

“As far as I’m concerned there will never be closure because I’ll never have my son back,” Ann Devert told The Post. “But this brings me a step closer to resolution.”
