Pelham Man Charged With DWI After Wrong-Way Crash On LIE

The 41-year-old and a 24-year-old woman were both hospitalized after the crash, police say.

A Pelham man was arrested after driving drunk the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway early Monday morning, Suffolk police confirmed. The crash closed part of the LIE at the beginning of rush hour. He was hospitalized.

According to police, John Durant, 41, entered the eastbound LIE traveling westbound in a 2007 Nissan Murano at Wicks Road in Brentwood.

He then crashed into a 2013 Nissan Altima near Exit 46 in Plainview at about 4 a.m.

Durant was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. The extent of his injuries were not released.

He will be arraigned at a later date, police said.

The driver of the Altima, 24-year-old Fatma Parwana, of Medford, was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released, police said.

Durant was charged with DWI and first degree reckless endangerment.

Part of the LIE in Plainview was shut down from about 4:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. due to the crash.
