Pelham MS STEAM Research Club Competes at Science Competition

This was the first competition for the club. A total of nine Pelham students and two teams presented and were judged.

From Pelham Middle School: The Pelham Middle School STEAM Research Club was extremely successful at the Tri-County Science Competition held at White Plains High School on April 22. The event marked the first competition for the club, which was started this school year, and a total of nine Pelham students, including two teams, presented and were judged.

In addition to being a regional science competition, Tri-county is also a qualifier for the Broadcom Masters national science fair, the middle school equivalent to the Intel Science Fair for high schoolers.

Sixth grader Julia Meyerson qualified to enter Broadcom's National Competition and sixth grader Leah Sherbansky placed 3rd in the Biology category and was named a Broadcom "alternate."

Dr. Tom Callahan, the District’s director of math and science, praised the entire middle school team and also thanked Mrs. Maria Buckley, who is the club’s adviser, and Mr. Steve Beltecas, who advises the PMHS science research team and helped develop the middle school program.

“Mrs. Buckley has done an outstanding job preparing the students for the Tri-County competition,” Dr. Callahan said. “I was so impressed with the students and their projects. Mrs. Buckley and Mr. Beltecas worked last summer to develop the program, and their preparation was definitely evidenced by the students' performances.”
