Pelham Teen Wins Award for Dance

Pelham's Elena Rubin, 15, has received the coveted Maria Jones Scholarship Award. The teen is being recognized for "excellence and promise" in the field of dance. Rubin was presented with the award at the JCC Dance School's Westchester Theatre of Dance Concert. The award is named after retired JCC Dance School instructor Maria Jones. Jones retired from the school, which is located in Scarsdale, back in 2003.

Rubin started ballet lessons eight years ago. Then, in 2007, she joined the JCC Dance School. The teenager is currently learning from instructors Justin Sherwood, Mimi Wallace and Jayne Santoro.

Even though she is young, Rubin already has a number of commanding performances under her belt, performing in Ballet Outreach presentations and a number of WTD productions.

In addition to her own endeavors, Rubin is a teaching assistant for JCC's Creative Movement class. And last summer, she trained at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet.
