Poets Hold Assemblies At Pelham Elementary Schools

Doug Florian and Ted Scheu held assemblies for elementary students to discuss poetry and helped students write their own poems.

From Pelham Schools:Last month visiting poets Doug Florian and Ted Scheu held assemblies and writing workshops with elementary school students grades K-5 in all four schools. The poets shared some of their original writing, discussed different forms of poetry and helped students find inspiration to write their own poems. Additionally, Mr. Florian, who is also an artist, shared what processes illustrators go through when illustrating a book. In one of the workshops with Prospect Hill 5 th graders, Mr. Scheu talked about “list poems” and gave the students ideas on what topics they might write about. They also talked about personification, the use of line breaks and Rhythm. Then, the students put pencil to paper and came up with their own ideas before reading them aloud to their classmates. Some topics chosen by the students included birthdays, Halloween, Monday, winter, football and first days.
