Stop & Shop, Yonkers Police, & People's United Bank Team Up to Create Personal Property Awareness

Local supermarket and partners join law enforcement officials to deliver critical messages on protection from identity theft.

Stop & Shop and People's United Bank hosted representatives from the Yonkers Police Department who provided shoppers with safety tips to prevent personal property theft.

A bank representative and police officer walked through the store aisles of the Cross County Mall Stop & Shop looking for shoppers who did not safely secure their personal items and then placed a “Keep an Eye on Your Purse” sticker on the “victim’s” purse, briefcase, IPhone or other personal item alerting the shopper of the dangers of leaving their property unattended and how it could lead to identity theft.

Police Officers then offered easy-to-follow safety tips on how best to protect their personal property when in any public place.

The day saw close to 20 shoppers be recipients of the "Keep an Eye on Your Purse" sticker who after learning of their fate were very thankful of the very valuable lesson they learned.

The Federal Trade Commission reports that 19 people become victims of identity theft every minute and the average victim can expect to spend $500 dollars and 30 hours resolving each identity theft crime.
