Visiting Chinese Instructor Teaches Social Studies at PMS
Yang Rui, a visiting instructor from China, team teaches for six weeks at Pelham Middle School.

While Pelham Middle School’s six graders tackle their China unit in social studies, they’ll have a native in the classroom augmenting their lessons.
To help liven up the study of China, Superintendent Dr. Dennis Lauro secured a grant in order to bring Yang Rui, a Chinese teacher, to PMS’ six grade classrooms. Rui met with the Board of Education on Monday night to share what she—and the students—have gained from the experience thus far.
“I like it here very much,” Rui noted. “It’s a job, but it’s a joy.”

Rui will spend two weeks with each of the six grade classes, team teaching with the social studies instructors. Rui works at a Chinese high school with which the Pelham School District has an established relationship.
“We’re thrilled to have her with us,” remarked Principal Joseph Longobardi. “The children love her. It’s working out well.”

When asked to compare the classroom environment in China to the environment in America, Rui noted that it’s difficult for her to judge, since she typically teaches older students. She did mention, however, that she sees the same passion among students in Pelham that she sees back home.
“Although they’re from different countries,” Rui said, “they have the same heart.”
