First Graders Launch Pumpkins in Classrooms
Old Bethpage Elementary School Students Design and Test Pumpkin Catapults
Plainview, NY — In an effort to commemorate the holidays in the classroom, first grade students at Old Bethpage Elementary School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District created pumpkin catapults—challenging them to activate their engineering skills while planning and sketching their method of construction. Students were encouraged to think creatively, rendering innovative designs and fostering an imaginative learning environment.
To assemble their pumpkin catapults, students chose from various materials provided, including popsicle sticks and rubber bands, testing different kinds of designs for effectiveness. Once tested, students measured three different trials, recording the data with each trial, and noting improvements they could make to the design to improve effectiveness. The practice of trial and error allowed students to learn from their mistakes and create design changes that taught them the importance of adjustments and growth.
The goal of this activity was to encourage these aspiring scientists to work diligently on their design plans and reflect as they moved through the project. Through working independently, students focused their attention on the design process, adjusting and learning the most effective methods throughout each of their attempts. The skills they utilized are reinforced each day within their classrooms, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment that promotes creativity and innovation.
