Hannon Proposes Blood Donor, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Blood donor proposition passed unanimously, cervical cancer proposition up for proclamation by governor.

The New York State Senate passed a resolution to make January as Blood Donor Awareness Month and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Introduced by Sen. Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City, the resolution passed unanimously to bring recognition to the two causes.

“Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness,” said Hannon in a statement, addressing low turnout rates and subsequent short supplies of blood inventory.

The resolution to make January Cervical Cancer Awareness Month was adopted and is awaiting a final proclamation by Gov. Andrew Cuomo

“Cervical cancer is the second-leading cancer among women worldwide, affecting almost 500,000 and resulting in more than 250,000 deaths yearly,” said Hannon. “However, cervical cancer is almost 100% curable if diagnosed and treated early, and is one of the most successfully treatable cancers with a five-year survival rate of 95 percent.”

New York’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Month will also coincide with the national month of recognition to encourage awareness of the disease and to promote early detection and education of warning signs.
