Holy Trinity's Homecoming Touched With Solemn Remembrance
John 'Jay' Kutner, who died in 1974, was remembered during homecoming pregame ceremony.
John “Jay” Kutner, for whom the football field is named, was the Titan quarterback during his time at Holy Trinity. He was critically injured during a football scrimmage in the fall of 1973 and died in 1974, his senior year.
Kutner’s number “5” was retired and more than 20 members of his family was in attendance for this event. Members of his 1973-74 football team were in attendance at homecoming and stood to honor their teammate.
Harry Kutner, Jr., Jay’s brother, spoke during the ceremony and thanked the Holy Trinity community: “We thank you for coming and remembering Jay, because as a family, not a day goes by that we don’t remember him, too,” he said.
The school also celebrated the dedication of the new bleachers that were installed this past summer. The Rev. John McCarthy, the school’s chaplain, blessed the bleachers that were filled to capacity with over 2,000 in attendance.
Prior to the game, there was also a prayer and moment of silence for freshman, Giovanni Cipriano, who died just the day before from complications due to a food allergy. Armbands were created by a current student and distributed to those in attendance that read, “Remember Giovanni Cipriano.”
The school’s flag has been flying at half-staff in his honor.
