Nassau Officer Hurt When Man Found With Drugs Drives Off: Cops

A Nassau County police officer suffered injuries to his leg, elbow and shoulder when a man found with drugs hit the gas, police say.

PLAINVIEW, NY — A Syosset man has been arrested in Plainview after police said he was found in a car with drugs and a needle and hit the gas when police tried to enter the car, injuring an officer.

Around 8:30 p.m. Monday, officers found Dion Hutchings, 25, lying back in the driver's seat of a vehicle on Sally Lane with a hypodermic needle containing a brown substance in his lap, Nassau County police said. When officers tried to talk to him, police said they noticed he was highly disoriented and under the influence of a controlled substance.

When officers tried to enter the vehicle, he tried to drive away, leaving an officer with injuries to his leg, elbow and shoulder, police said. Officers eventually managed to control Hutchings and took him into custody.

Both the officer and Hutchings were taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Hutchings faces charges of 2nd-degree assault, unlawful possession of a hypodermic instrument, criminal possession of a controlled substance, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. He was expected to appear in court after receiving treatment.
