New Plainview Grocery Store To Hold Grand Opening This Weekend

The chain is known for its low prices and pleasant organization of grocery products.

PLAINVIEW, NY — A new, highly touted grocery store is opening in Plainview known for its pleasant organization and, most of all, low prices. Lidl said it will open its fourth food market Saturday at Old Country Road and Lester Place. A ribbon-cutting event and grand opening will be held at 7:40 a.m.

The opening weekend will feature special deals, giveaways and prizes for shoppers. The store will open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

"I’ve worked in grocery for more than 30 years and what Lidl is bringing to Long Island is going to be a game changer," store Manager Rafael Monroy said in a news release. "Customers in Plainview can look forward to high quality products at amazing prices and a friendly and engaging staff that is ready to assist them."

Town of Oyster Bay officials applauded the news.

Councilman Louis Imbroto, meanwhile, said grocery stores such as Lidl give residents options to eat healthy meals. It also employs local workers and keeps downtown vibrant.

"It's always great to see local storefronts thriving and we’re happy to welcome Lidl to Morton Village Plaza in Plainview," Imbroto said.

Councilman Steve Labriola highlighted Lidl's history of "award-winning customer experience," which he said will make them a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

"I am pleased to welcome Lidl to our community, and wish them much success in the Town of Oyster Bay," Labriola said.

Food & Wine magazine in 2018 ranked Lidl No. 3 on its list of 10 best supermarkets, writing:

"Never heard of it? Oh, you will, and sooner than later. Many a European shopper depends on this fiercely budget German supermarket chain, a strong competitor with Aldi back home, and now, here too, looks like. The concept is similar to both Aldi and Trader Joe's—smaller footprints, lots of private label, lots of low prices—but for Lidl's American debut, the company went almost overboard, throwing wide the doors to a series of light-filled, reasonably-organized stores, making grocery shopping that much more pleasant for anyone on any kind of budget, all up and down the East Coast, from New Jersey to the Carolinas.

"Studies have shown that for each market Lidl enters, stunning grocery price wars have ensued—fingers crossed they'll make it out into the rest of the country. The rest of us are waiting for those cheap and good croissants, which come out fresh daily from one of the best value-priced supermarket bakeries in the country right now."

Lidl operates more than 11,000 stores and across 32 countries. It will provide healthy, responsible food, including hundreds of organic and gluten free products. American products, making up most of its offerings, are sourced in the United States, the chain said. It also offers unique, European specialty items such as hard-to-find cheeses, authentic specialty sauces, cured meats, beer and more.
