Two of her children were Nassau County Police officers and three were members of the Plainview Volunteer Fire Dept.
Her granddaughter, Katie Mertz, wrote this tribute to her grandmother:
RIP Nana
"I am so sorry that you were taken away from this world so soon. You were such a positive person and the sweetest woman I have ever met.
"You had a heart of gold. Your laugh and smile I'm going to miss so much. I'm going to miss when you call me on the phone or when you call me 'darling' or 'babe.' You were just one wonderful woman, Nana.
"You were a fighter even 'til literally your last breath. You lived to help others. You changed so many people’s lives and helped them through hard times. You gave people love and hope. All you did was love.
"You had so many friends. You could go up to anyone and have a conversation with them. All you did was love me and my family. You always tried to go to my games or school functions. You were the family's number one fan and biggest supporter.
You always saw the beauty in me. You always said that I could do anything I wanted to. You wanted me to graduate from Nassau Community College where you taught and Nana I'm going to work so hard to do that for you. My diploma is going to be for YOU in your memory
"I wish someday I could be half the woman that you were. Nana: I love you so much and I'm never EVER going to forget you. Thank you for being the best grandmother a granddaughter could ask for.
"Thank you Nana for everything. I love you Nana and may you rest in peace.
"Love you forever, Kaitlyn
