Plainview Community Center Earns $5K Grant For Alzheimer’s Care
The program provides social engagement and cognitive stimulation for individuals with Alzheimer's through various activities.

Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview was recently awarded a $5,000 grant to provide respite care services for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses.
The center was among 15 organizations in nine states to receive the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America's Milton and Phyllis Berg Respite Care Grant program.
“As the number of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease grows, so too does the need for these important respite care programs,” AFA Board Treasurer Barry Berg said in a press release. “The Mid-Island Y JCC offers a valuable service, and we are pleased to deliver this funding to help them continue their good work.”

Mid-Island Y JCC's Reflections Day Program provides social engagement and cognitive stimulation for individuals with Alzheimer’s through activities such as art and exercise, gardening, baking, and word games, while also giving caregivers a break to tend to their other needs.
Reflections Day Program provides clients a "holistic opportunity to enhance personal experiences and integrate the body, mind and spirit," says Sara Schapiro, LMSW, Director of Adult and Social Services for the Mid-Island Y JCC.

"Daily fitness activities, cognitive exercises and the opportunity to socialize and connect with others reduces isolation, anxiety and depression," she said. "The level of care we provide, as well as the quality of our program, enables caregivers to trust their loved ones will be cared for in the best possible way while attending our program. This trust offers caregivers a much needed respite from the day to day challenge of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s or dementia. ”
