Plainview, N.Y. - The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is pleased to congratulate Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School (POBMS) student Bhavana Madini, Grade 7, for becoming this year's champion of the NYC Regional Scripps Spelling Bee.
Although different from previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions, Bhavana had no issue emerging victorious in the virtual POBMS schoolwide spelling competition, as well as the regional virtual spelling bee that ended in a three-way tie. This is the 3rd year in a row that Bhavana has been the spelling bee winner schoolwide, regionally, and qualifying for nationals.
Bhavana will be moving on to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee that will take place in Florida this year on July 8. Typically, the Spelling Bee is hosted in Washington, D.C., but due to COVID-19 restrictions and a need for an outdoor location, the nationally televised competition will take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort.
