Water Quality Confusion Caused by News12 Story

The Bethpage Water District was prepared and already had treatment in place!

Dear Residents,

You may have seen a News12 report last night highlighting 21 water suppliers on Long Island sent notices to their customers about emerging contaminants. As a customer of our district, you did not receive one. Why? Because we were ready and already have the treatment in place!
Years before the state's new drinking water standards went into effect for 1,4-Dioxane and perfluorinated compounds, tremendous efforts were put forward by the District to install the state-of-the-art treatment systems needed to remove those contaminants. The state health department recognized the amount of time and resources it took to accomplish this goal and allowed water suppliers who might not be ready to request a "deferral". Because we were out-in-front of this entire issue – and committed significant resources – we were able to design and construct treatment systems at our wells in advance of the new standards – so we never needed a deferral!

We, the Bethpage Water District and our beloved community, are leading the industry in ground water filtration. Your water continues to be of the highest quality – meeting and exceeding all regulatory standards – because that's what you deserve and we refuse to settle for anything less. We know it's a tremendous investment being made with the tax dollars that YOU as Bethpage residents pay and we are continuing to fight for those responsible to pay us back and make our community whole.

We are tired of this community being used as a political platform when we make real progress in dealing with the Northrop Grumman/Navy plume. We are frustrated that this community is continuously casted in a negative light every time groundwater contamination is mentioned when we are the ONLY ones who have been focused on this issue for decades. For us, this isn't a political issue, it is simply THE issue.

In the meantime – we are not deterred, and will remain steadfast in our obligation to provide you with safe drinking water. We will always remain at-the-ready for you!
